A FOUNDATION YOU CAN USE

Understand the technology.
Put it into practice.

This foundation-level course introduces artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, generative AI and cyber security. It focuses on clear concepts, guided activities and everyday applications.

You will learn how AI systems use data, write more effective prompts, check AI-generated output, recognise common cyber threats and use AI responsibly.

The course welcomes undergraduate students from science, engineering, computer science, IT, arts, humanities and other disciplines. No prior AI, machine learning or cyber security knowledge is required.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

From AI basics to safer AI use.

01

AI & machine learning

Understand AI, learning methods, data quality, model evaluation and the basics of neural networks.

02

Generative AI & prompts

Write structured prompts for study and work. Refine responses and check for errors, bias and unreliable references.

03

Cyber security & responsible AI

Recognise phishing, protect your accounts and understand AI-assisted security, deepfakes and privacy risks.

THE COMPLETE SYLLABUS

Eight sessions. A connected learning path.

90 minutes per session
01Introduction to Artificial Intelligence

Start with the meaning, evolution and everyday applications of AI.

  • Narrow AI and applications across disciplines.
  • AI versus machine learning, deep learning and generative AI.
  • The basic AI workflow, limitations and challenges.

Practice: Identify and classify AI applications in different fields.

02Data & Fundamentals of Machine Learning
  • Datasets, features, labels, data quality and data bias.
  • Supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning.
  • Training and testing data, overfitting and underfitting.
  • Model evaluation: accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score.

Practice: Examine a dataset and explore classification and model evaluation with an accessible no-code tool.

03Machine Learning in Practice & Neural Networks
  • Machine learning workflows, classification, regression and clustering.
  • Neural networks, neurons, layers and activation functions at a conceptual level.
  • Deep learning, an introduction to convolutional neural networks and their applications.

Practice: Explore a visual no-code workflow and a simple neural network.

04Generative AI Tools & Prompt Engineering
  • Generative AI uses, strengths and limitations. AI assistants versus search engines.
  • Tools for writing, study, research and creative work.
  • Prompt framework: Role, Task, Context, Requirements and Output Format.
  • Zero-shot, few-shot, role-based, step-by-step, context-rich, constraint-based, structured-output and iterative prompting.
  • Hallucinations, outdated information, bias and fake references.
  • Verify output using Generate, Check, Verify, Refine and Use.
  • Academic integrity, disclosure, privacy and copyright.

Practice: Compare basic and structured prompts, refine outputs and check the reliability of AI-generated information.

05Fundamentals of Cyber Security
  • Assets, threats, vulnerabilities, risk and the CIA Triad.
  • Authentication, authorisation, password security, multi-factor authentication and passkeys.
  • Network, web, mobile and cloud security fundamentals.
  • Practical cyber security habits.

Practice: Guided account-security and cyber-awareness exercises.

06Cyber Threats & Security Awareness
  • Social engineering, phishing, smishing and vishing.
  • Malware, ransomware and distributed denial-of-service attacks.
  • Data breaches, identity theft, basic incident response and cyber fraud awareness.
  • Safe online practices, taught at an awareness and defensive level.

Practice: Identify phishing attempts in educational exercises.

07Artificial Intelligence for Cyber Security
  • AI and machine learning for spam, phishing, malware and fraud detection.
  • Anomaly detection and Security Operations Centre applications.
  • AI-assisted threat detection, false positives and false negatives.
  • Human-in-the-loop security and the limitations of AI-based systems.

Practice: Explore AI-based spam and phishing detection.

08AI Security, Responsible AI & Applications
  • AI-enabled threats, AI-generated phishing and deepfakes.
  • Prompt injection, safe prompting, data poisoning and adversarial inputs at a conceptual level.
  • Privacy, bias, fairness, transparency, accountability and ethical AI use.
  • Final practical activity and mini-project presentation.

Practice: Apply safe prompting, recognise deepfakes and present a mini-project or application-based activity.

LEARN BY DOING

Guided practice in every session.

Instructor demonstrations and guided activities use free, accessible online tools. The practical work does not require programming.

Cyber security exercises use simulated activities and educational platforms at an awareness and defensive level.

  • No-code machine learning and dataset exploration.
  • Visualisation of a simple neural network.
  • Generative AI tool exploration and prompt challenges.
  • Fact-checking AI output and spotting hallucinations.
  • Account security, phishing recognition and deepfake awareness.
  • A final mini-project or application-based presentation.

CERTIFICATION & ATTENDANCE

Earn your certificate.
Commit to every session.

The certificate is issued by IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF) on successful course completion.
